What is ONDO?
ONDO is the native token of the Ondo ecosystem, a platform that is focused on bridging the gap between DeFi and traditional finance (TradFi) products through tokenised treasuries. ONDO plays a critical role in this ecosystem, primarily as a governance token, enabling its holders to influence the development and strategic direction of Ondo’s Flux Finance - a decentralised lending protocol that is a forked iteration of Compound V2 designed to support permissionless and permissioned tokens.
The history of ONDO
Ondo was launched in 2021, focusing on real world assets (RWAs), such as treasuries, money markets, and structured products. Following a vote by the Ondo Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO), as of January 18 2024, the ONDO token was enabled for transfer. This not only unlocked the token and enabled it to be traded freely but also established a distribution schedule for the token, in line with community consensus. In doing so, the creation and unlock of the ONDO token has enabled broader Ondo DAO participation and influence over the Flux Finance ecosystem.
Key features of ONDO
Governance: ONDO token holders have the power to participate in the governance of the Flux Finance protocol but not Ondo as a company. They can vote on proposals, such as protocol upgrades, changes to parameters, and allocation of funds from the treasury.
Role of ONDO
Whilst Ondo may be targeting more TradFi investors with their suite of products, Ondo is still very much a crypto powered project, with the ONDO token acting as a governance token within the Ondo ecosystem.
