The Crypto Market Cycle

If you’re new to crypto or investing in general, a bear market occurs when a market experiences prolonged price declines due to overall economic conditions.

Here’s our top tips to thrive during a bear market period and best position yourself for the next market run.

Determine your strategy

“Fail to plan, plan to fail.” This wisdom holds especially true in the volatile world of crypto.

And deciding to dump your life savings on a token that your friend said is set to rocket in price isn’t the type of “strategy” we’re talking about.

So, are you Dollar-Cost-Averaging? HODLing? If you’re day trading, consider what “edge” you might have.

Whatever it is, having a solid plan and sticking to it is a great way to set yourself up for success.

Remember that market cycles are natural

Cycles happen across all aspects of life, and crypto is no different. They rise, peak, fall, and the process repeats itself.

The key is to expect this and not fight the cycle. It’s not a bull market anymore.

If you’re newer to crypto, you may be surprised by how deep and quick the drawdowns can occur. Take a long term time horizon and recognize what part of the cycle we’re in.

Would you have been excited to buy at these prices when crypto was two or three times as high a year or more ago?

Use the down market to upskill

With new technologies and projects emerging all the time in crypto, it can be tough to keep up.

Remember, knowledge is power! And adding skills might give you the edge you need to approach the market with fresh eyes.

Tune out and turn off

With all the opinions online, investing in crypto can feel high pressure.

You might see a tweet suggesting you “buy the dip,” a Reddit thread explaining why you should cash out immediately, or a YouTube video showing you a “perfect” trade — all within a few minutes of each other.

Our brains weren’t built for this ocean of information.

So as helpful as crypto Twitter can be, it’s important to know when to shut out outside voices and make your own decisions.

If you’re acting on something you’ve read online, make sure it aligns with your own personal circumstances and finances.

Words of wisdom

We’re still in the early innings of this technology. Who knows what exciting use-cases will emerge or which projects will thrive during this time?

Until then, take comfort in knowing that crypto has been through difficult times before and has better days ahead!

What can you do when things go sideways or down for a bit? Here are five ideas that may help 👇

Forget your peak net worth number

Even though it’s difficult, try to avoid obsessing over the loan you could have paid off, the house you could have bought, or the riches you could have been swimming in.

Chasing after this number will likely lead to poor decision-making.

Instead, try journaling about what happened to your investment and what you might change in the future:

Did you not take profits as you had planned?

Did you not leave enough cash on the sidelines for unexpected life events?

Were you listening to the wrong influencers?

Did you focus on a project’s hype instead of its fundamentals?

Did you not have a plan in the first place?

Identifying these decisions can help you make better ones in the future. The first step is acknowledging the problem.

Avoid revenge trading and FOMO

If you’re down substantially from your portfolio highs, you’re likely not going to make it back on one trade.

Yet, this doesn’t prevent people from revenge trading, trying to recover a loss from previous trades in a super short period––and often acting irrationally in the process.

The key to avoiding this is position sizing, adjusting your trade size to fit your account balance. You’ll always risk a set percentage of your account on each trade, no matter how large or small your account is.

For example, if you can risk 2% of your portfolio per trade, and have a $10,000 account, you’ll take a $200 position on each trade. If your account doubles or shrinks, so does your trade size.

Position sizing is critical because it helps you stay in the game, even if you run into a string of losing trades.

Consider dynamic dollar cost averaging

Macro investor Darius Dale tells his audience to not only dollar cost average — investing a set amount weekly or monthly — but to dynamically dollar cost average.

What does this mean?

When the financial outlook is negative, you scale back your buying in favor of holding more cash. When the financial outlook improves, you increase the size of your purchase.

To make the strategy even better, you can direct part of your monthly investment into a dollar-pegged stablecoin like USDC, USDT, or USDP and move them into a Blockchain.com Rewards Account to earn a competitive APY.

Take risk off the table if you can’t sleep at night

Yup, that’s the whole tip. 👆

The predictable thing about crypto is that it’s unpredictable. If that causes you to lose sleep, you may have too much at risk.

Keep an open mind

We’re still in the early innings of this technology.

When the internet went mainstream, it was hard to imagine that companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon would emerge.

The same goes for Ethereum and Bitcoin today. We don’t know what amazing use cases will emerge or which projects will thrive.

We know it hasn’t been easy out there. But the good news is that crypto has been through difficult times before.

Take risk off the table if you can’t sleep at night

And that’s often when the best building happens. 🏗️

What to do in a crypto downturn

Cryptocurrency can be a volatile investment. Prices can swing wildly in a matter of hours or days, making it difficult for individuals to know when to buy or sell.

However, downturns in the market can be the perfect time to buy crypto. Here’s why:

Lower Prices

During a downmarket, crypto prices are generally lower than during a bullish market. This presents an opportunity for individuals to buy the same amount of cryptocurrency for a lower price. When the market eventually recovers, the value of the cryptocurrency will rise, and the investor will have made a profit.

Long Term Potential

Cryptocurrency is still a relatively new technology. It has the potential to revolutionize the way we do business, store value, and transfer funds. Buying crypto during a downmarket means investing in this potential for the long term. While the market may be down now, the potential rewards could be significant in the future.

Diversification

Buying cryptocurrency can be a way to diversify your investment portfolio. It offers a different type of asset than traditional stocks and bonds. By buying crypto during a downmarket, individuals can spread their risk across different types of investments.

Opportunity for Learning

During a downmarket, you have the opportunity to learn more about cryptocurrency and the market — learn about the technology behind different cryptos, and develop a better understanding of how the market works.

This knowledge can be valuable for future purchases and can help individuals make informed decisions.

With large price swings and markets operating around the clock, crypto’s volatility can not only impact your investments but can also take its toll on your mental wellbeing too.

While 2020 “officially became the most stressful year in recent history” according to Gallup, ‘Burnout’, the mental and physical exhaustion experienced due to prolonged exposure to stressful situations, is now recognized as a chronic condition by the World Health Organization.

And with money being one of the most common causes of stress, crypto traders are at a heightened risk.

To prevent experiencing burnout, we’ve put together five tips to help you keep a level head when trading and prioritize your mental health.

Create a daily schedule — and stick to it

The markets may operate 24/7, but this doesn’t mean you should too.

Create set trading hours, and ensure you include breaks throughout the day to eat and get some fresh air.

Scheduling time for exercise will also help prolong mental stamina and reduce stress.

Recognize when FOMO kicks in

FOMO — Fear of Missing Out. We’ve all experienced it, and at one stage or another, we’ve probably all acted on it. Your social channels are brimming with posts boasting potential gains on a certain token, and you dive in headfirst.

The risk of allowing emotion to take over can lead to us neglecting trading plans and potentially investing more than we can afford.

The first step of overcoming FOMO is recognizing when it kicks in, and acknowledging that this reaction lacks any long-term perspective.

Stick to your trading plan, and think with your head — not your heart!

Keep a trading journal

Keeping a log of your trades will help you to identify patterns more easily. This practice will not only keep you on track for long-term success but will help to grow your confidence in trading too.

At a minimum, keeping a track of your entry, top, and limit price will help you identify the characteristics of your wins and losses, enabling you to refine your strategies.

Take regular screen breaks

Taking regular screen breaks is not only important for preventing eye strain and headaches but also for your concentration and overall productivity levels.

Try the 20–20–20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet (around 7 yards) away for 20 full seconds.

They say it takes on average 66 days for a new behavior to become a habit, so for now, set a reminder on your phone for every 20 minutes and practice giving yourself a little less screen time.

Last but not least, get enough sleep!

Prioritize a good night’s sleep.

It’s an essential function, and without a decent amount of it, you increase your risk of disease and prevent your brain from functioning properly.

Trading performance is as much about mental stamina as it is anything else. Ensuring your body and mind have time to recharge should be a key component of any trading plan.
